From discovering oil reservoirs miles beneath the ocean surface, to identifying volcanoes on Venus, Business Intelligence tools continue to proliferate at a remarkable pace, permeating every major industry in the world. BI Vision Houston showcased some of BI's leading luminaries, including a renowned oil and gas guru, as that industry has historically served as a pioneer in data aggregation, analysis and mining. The event offered insights to help executives from a host of industries shape their corporate strategies through better analysis and visualization of large data sets. This one-day conference covered the spectrum of Advanced Business Intelligence in today's enterprise.

Conference Highlights

  • The morning keynote, crafted by Dr. Michael Economides, co-author of the best-selling book, The Color Of Oil, and presented by his colleague Dr. Michael Nikolaou, delved into the submarine world of deepwater and ultra-deepwater oil exploration and discussed a proposed $3 billion, seven-year data mining initiative.
  • The lunch keynote, presented by CRM guru Randy Grossman (former SVP for Bank One and Fleet), featured real-world anecdotes of data analysis in the financial services industry.
  • A look at What's Next in Data Warehousing with DW guru Michael Haisten, author of a series of articles on real-time data warehousing and other subjects which can be viewed at www.dmreview.com.
  • Norman Comstock gave insight into best practices for analytics. Check out his article in Intelligent Enterprise on the subject, 7 Habits of Highly Effective OLAP Development Teams.
  • Industry expert Dr. Usama Fayyad, co-founder and CEO of digiMine, also weighed in on the importance of data mining across a broad range of industries. Dr. Fayyad founded and led the Data Mining & Exploration (DMX) Group at Microsoft Research from 1996 to 2000. His work there included the invention and development of scalable algorithms for mining large databases and customizing them for server products such as Microsoft SQL Server and OLAP Services. These components shipped in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 as part of the new industry standard in data mining, Microsoft's OLE DB API, which Dr. Fayyad also helped establish and promote. He received the most distinguished excellence award from Cal Tech/JPL and a U.S. Government Medal from NASA.
